For years pregnant women have been told that Tylenol (acetaminophen) is the pain reliever for them. 

However, long-term studies now show that taking the commonly suggested medication too often during pregnancy may cause serious harm to unborn children.

The basis for these new acetaminophen lawsuits is new scientific research suggesting the use of the popular pain-killer Tylenol (or generic acetaminophen) during pregnancy may increase the risk of having a baby with autism. This new evidence linking Tylenol to autism has led to a growing number of product liability lawsuits against manufacturers and retailers by parents of children with autism.

Does Tylenol Cause Autism?

In 2018, researchers did a meta-analysis of seven studies involving 132,738 pairs of mothers and children. The analysis revealed a 20% higher risk of autism for children who had prolonged exposure to acetaminophen in the womb. In 2019, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that children whose cord blood samples contained the highest levels of acetaminophen — the generic name for the drug Tylenol — were roughly three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder later in childhood, compared to children with the lowest levels of acetaminophen in their cord blood.

Does Tylenol Cause Autism/ADHD?

It’s possible, yes. Recent studies suggest that taking Tylenol during pregnancy can increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. The risk could be even higher if Tylenol use happened for longer periods or later in the pregnancy — like during the second and third trimester — according to UCLA Health.

What is the link between Tylenol and ADHD?

The FDA has been reviewing information regarding whether Tylenol damages the developing brain and causes ADHD. They also initially issued a warning relating to the studies that have shown possible links to autism.

These studies are based on the experiences of mothers who used the drug during their pregnancies. The risk of having a child with ADHD rose by approximately 1.7 times if the mothers had taken Tylenol while pregnant.

The study also showed that children who have been exposed to acetaminophen may be twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD.
